WHAT IS KUMBH MELA?
According to historical legend, the "devas" (Gods) once lost their powers and in the order to regain them, they agreed to undertake the churning of the orimordial ocean along with the "Asuras" (Demons). Thereafter, a celestial battle took place between Devas and Asuras for the pitcher containing the nectar of Immortal ("Amrit Kumbh"). The battle continued and during the process, a few drops of the divine nectar fell at four places- Namely: Nasik, Ujjain, Prayagraj and Haridwar.
Consequently , every 12 years, the effervescent festival of the Kumbh mela is held at the banks of Rivers of each of the 4 cities to commemorate the event. The exact time and place of the kumbh festival is astrologically determined. The position of the Sun, Moon and Jupiter in different zodiac sings determines the location of the kumbh in each of these places. It is believed that during this time, the water of the sacred Rivers regain their sanctity and ambrosial qualities at the site of the kumbh mela. Below picture is demonstrating the battle between the "devas" and "asura" for the "amrit".This picture was taken from one of the exhibition at Kumbh Mela 2019.
